What To Expect During DNC Surgery
DNC surgery, also known as Dilation and Curettage or D&C for short, is a diagnostic vaginal procedure. This procedure is done for various conditions found in the uterus. It is an invasive procedure and should be handled with great care, as there are complications that may arise during or after, and can become serious if not treated. There are alternative procedures for some of the conditions D&C was previously used for. Your health professional will know and advise you on the best treatment plan for you.
There are a couple of steps to a D&C procedure. The first step is to dilate the woman's cervix by using dilation rods to stretch it open mechanically. One after another the rods become larger until the cervix has dilated the the appropriate size. This is followed by the curettage process which is done with the use of a tool called the curette. The curette is tool with a long metal handle and a small scoop at the tip.
D & C as a means of treatment or diagnosis has been useful for a number of uterine conditions. Dilation and Curettage has been used to remove any residual pieces of the placenta that has not naturally exited the uterus. It is also used in the case of postpartum hemorrhage. A number of pregnancy conditions and complications have been treated using this procedure, such as miscarriage, and elective abortion. The diagnosis of cancer and the removal of polyps have been successfully treated as well.
During the procedure the patient is put under heavy sedation. The gynecologist then begins dilation followed by curettage. The doctor may choose to use an ultrasound or hysteroscope to get better visualization of the area being operated on. Once this process is finished the patient is watched closely for any adverse signs.
The risk level of this procedure compared to others is higher due to the inability of the doctor to see the area they are operating on. Too much scrapping of the tissue on the uterine wall can result in Asherman's Syndrome. This scarring may cause miscarriages and other fertility problems in the future. This may be an issue that happens when the curette used is sharp as opposed to the suction or blunter curette. Proper precautions should be taken to ensure infection does not occur.
To be safe, keep a close eye during your recovery for any changes you may experience after the procedure. If you feel or experience anything abnormal, call your doctor right away for a follow up. Any pain, excessive bleeding, or changes in the color is cause for concern. Any duration changes in bleeding should also be noted and reported to your gynecologist immediately.
There may be alternative treatments available depending on what your condition is. Many woman opt to use an alternative treatment to elective abortion since less invasive options became available. Your doctor will be able to give you more information so you can make an informed decision as to your choice in care.
Having any procedure done can be a scary thing. Having DNC surgery is no different and should be carefully and thoroughly discussed with your health professional so that the best outcome is achieved.
