What To Do the First Few Weeks of Pregnancy
So you've done everything right so far. You've jumped for joy, took a double look, and confirmed. You're pregnant! Congratulations! While pregnancy is one of the most exciting and life changing events you will ever experience, it is also one of the most confusing. Therefore, it is perfectly fine to have more than a few questions. Here is a short and condensed guide to dealing with your first few weeks of pregnancy and all of the changes that it entails.
While the first thing you will surely want to do is go running straight to your entire family with the great news you must wait. You first step should be to make an appointment with your doctor for a pregnancy test as soon as possible. While this may seem a bit to thorough since you already experienced a positive at home test it really is necessary. At home tests have a reputation for occasionally being wrong. The test your doctor will run can confirm that you are indeed pregnant and that this isn't just a false alarm This way, if you happen to not be pregnant, you will not look silly by announcing a false alarm to your entire family.
Another thing that you'll want to discuss with your doctor immediately in the case of you being pregnant is prenatal vitamins. These can be prescribed or bought over the counter at a drug store. They are usually less than a few dollars but are invaluable when it comes to the baby's development in the first couple of weeks. Ideally you should be taking prenatal vitamins before you even conceive because there are very important during the baby's first few weeks before you are even aware you are pregnant. Make sure to discuss with your doctor which kind of prenatal vitamins are best for you and your baby.
The next step is announcing your good news. While some couples find they would rather just tell everyone at home in a standard sit down conversation, some couples prefer to get creative. One idea is to have your first ultrasound pictures framed and presented to the grandparents and/or other important people you would like to tell. The most important thing to remember is that no matter how other people feel this is your pregnancy and you should be happy.
The next thing you are probably wanting to do is go shopping for baby supplies. While you will not know the sex of the baby in the first few weeks of pregnancy, you can still purchase gender neutral supplies such as blankets, diapers, bottles, and things like that. While you may think that nine months is plenty of time to gather supplies like these, you can never have too many diapers. Stocking up on diapers will give you not only some leeway in how much you have to spend on diapers later, but you will find your diaper supply quickly dwindle.
Diet is another important factor in your pregnancy. Possibly one of the most important. While your food cravings will help you know what you and the baby need to stay healthy it is best to stay on top of things by planning a meticulous pregnancy diet that contains all of the nutrients and vitamins that will be essential to the health of you and the baby. While this sounds hard your doctor should be able to help you and everything should be approved by him/her.
