When you are having sex while you have your period, it is always possible that you could end up pregnant. Each woman's cycle is total different. Some women have shorter cycles than other women and this can lead to your ovulation time being different each month. For conception to occur the egg has to be released and then there has to be sperm present to meet the egg. Once the sperm has fertilized the egg, pregnancy occurs.

For pregnancy to occur in the first place, there must be sperm inside the reproductive system of the female or in one of the fallopian tubes. When you are having your period the uterine lining and the released egg will be expelled from the body. When you ovulate and release an egg, this egg can survive for up to twenty four hours . If you have unprotected sex and the sperm is still present inside you, then there is a possibility you can become pregnant.

it has been noted that sperm can last in the body for five days or longer. If you have a shorter monthly cycle, it would be possible to get pregnant close to or during your period. The menstrual cycle runs from the first day of your period to the first day of your next period.

Most women average a twenty eight day cycle. Others may have a much shorter cycle of only twenty two days. Shorter cycles can increase the chances of unexpected pregnancies. Because of a shorter cycle, the time of ovulation may be closer to when the menstruation cycle has ended and bleeding has ceased.

Most woman have what is called breakthrough bleeding or spotting. Often women mistake this spotting for their real period. Breakthrough bleeding is when you are spotting and not having an actual period. Most times spotting occurs around the time of ovulation when a woman is at her most fertile peak. Because this spotting is mistaken for a full blown period, many women can become pregnant during this time.

It is possible to become pregnant while on your period. At any time that you have unprotected sex, there is always a possibility you could become pregnant. The only way to guarantee not to get pregnant is to use some form of protection. Since every woman's cycle runs differently, there is no set time during the month when you could say you would not get pregnant. This often leads to unplanned pregnancies because of the belief that you are safe during your period. However you need to be aware that sperm can still remain in your reproductive system so there is always a possibility that you could possible become pregnant.
