Providing a workforce with healthcare benefits can save employers millions of pounds, a recent report has found. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which advises the NHS in England and Wales, believes the measures may help to tackle obesity, smoking and drinking.
Cash health plans aim to encourage the policy holder to receive early treatment and resolve any small medical/dental or optical problems quickly. Some plans offer more specific benefits such as home help, follow up treatment or care for illness at home. Some health plans offer other insurance benefits such as critical illness insurance and help towards funeral costs.
This is not the first time that NICE has considered cash incentives; previously they have backed rewards to encourage people off drugs. NICE are hoping to gauge public reaction into the proposals by putting the concept in front of its citizen's council on Thursday and Friday (20th & 21st May 2010).
Originally health cash plans were just for use in hospital but now they are much more useful and are becoming much more popular.
There are restrictions with cash health plans as they are in place to help with the cost of treatment rather than actually to provide the treatment, which means you will have to source the treatment yourself.
If NICE do indeed end up backing the proposed plans or similar schemes, recommendations that cover all of England and Wales are still around a year away. In the meantime the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence are working closely with a team of London-based experts from King's College, Queen Mary University and the London School of Economics, who are carrying out research into the issue.
