Get Ready For A Baby Girl

Even though parents can determine an accurate estimate of a baby's sex by having an ultrasound, many like to turn to other methods. Popular wives' tales demonstrate several signs of the sex of an unborn child.

A baby's sex is determined by the father of the child. During intercourse, a man can either provide an x or y chromosome (to be matched with the mother's x chromosome). An x chromosome would produce a daughter. Studies suggest this generally has to do with the timing of intercourse in relation to a woman's ovulation. A female sperm can survive two to five days, but travel slowly to fertilize an egg. A male sperm travels much quicker, although it will not survive as long. This would mean intercourse would have to be very close to the beginning of ovulation to create a boy.

Legends also say there are other things a couple looking to conceive can do to increase their chances of having a daughter. One myth is based on the woman's diet. If she eats fish and fresh vegetables, as well as sweets and chocolates, she'll have a daughter. Also, if parents time intercourse for only even days of the month, during a full moon or in the afternoon they'll make a girl. They also say the dad should wear boxers instead of briefs.

Already past that point? People believe there are many characteristics of a pregnant mother that point to the fact she is carrying a daughter. Brought on by myths or old wives' tales, these stories are never proven, but nonetheless have developed over time.

One of the most popular stories is the mother's belly can show the sex of the baby. If a girl is on the way, the stomach would be watermelon-shaped and the baby is held higher, rather than lower and closer to the pelvis, like a son.

Another popular myth is a child's heartbeat can determine their sex. Even though studies have shown this is only true after labor begins, it is still said a heartbeat of over 140 beats per minute equate to a little girl.

An old wives' tale says that a daughter steals her mother's beauty during pregnancy. This in turn has linked a lot of the least attractive parts of pregnancies to a baby girl on the way. Pregnancy acne, as well as severe morning sickness are said to be signs of a daughter.

Also, it is said that if dad is gaining "sympathy" weight, mom is having a girl. Staying fit? A boy is on the way.

While pregnancy weight is expected in a mother, stories claim how she carries this weight is a sign of a daughter. If the mother is carrying extra weight in her face and around the thighs and behind, then she should expect a daughter.

Even though a lot of these stories have stood the test of time, most have been disproved by scientific tests and studies. Nevertheless, they at least provide a little entertainment for expectant parents until they can really find out if they now have a daughter or son.
