Career Options In The Child Care Social Services Sector

If you are thinking of a career in child care social services then there are many avenues you can explore. However, you have to be extremely committed to the welfare of children in need to opt for this line of work as it can be very, very demanding indeed.

If children are the concern of social services it is because a crisis situation has occurred in their lives. The authorities have to take over the responsibility and decision making on behalf of the child. In some cases this arises as a result of death or incapacity of the parents in other cases authorities assume the rights of the parents by force of law.

In other cases it children may be subject to physical or sexual abuse from someone around them. Often a parent, step parent or sibling is the abuser. Children may have to be placed on an At Risk register or completely removed from their homes. If you decide on a career in social work, you could be involved in such decision making. This could leave you open to resentment and bitterness if you are forced to separate children from their families.

Perhaps you would prefer to work directly with children catering to their primary needs. Residential workers are employed in homes where children are placed by authorities immediately they have taken over responsibility for them if no foster family is available. They are expected to remain in a home until they can be returned to their families or a foster family is identified. Some young people do remain in the homes until they are old enough to live independently.

If you prefer to look after children in a family setting you may consider foster parenting. This can be very rewarding but also very demanding work. You have to open up your heart and home to a needy young person who in their trauma may seem unappreciative or even destructive. However the benefits to this work are beyond measure and you could impact upon the life of a young person forever.
