Artificial Insemination Has Emerged As An Indispensable Procedure
The world was once a wilderness but is no more. When human beings began using tools they set in motion a process of altering the environment to benefit themselves. The consequences have been monumental, and the planet Earth has become artificial to quite a large extent, with both positive and negative effects. Artificial insemination seems to be one of the most beneficial procedures.
Procedures developed in agriculture to solve problems of infertility prepared the way for procedures that would in time be applied to similar human problems. An infertile bull can cause considerable financial problems if he is relied upon to do what he cannot.
At a more advanced level, it was soon discovered that valuable genetic traits such as heavy milk production are encoded in the sperm of specific animals. By using semen from such an animal the traits of good milk production can be spread through a very large number of females with huge economic consequences.
The national socialist beliefs that were prevalent in the twentieth century led to keen interest in breeding procedures. Had Nazis won the Second World War there might have been greater interest in using techniques to spread genetic traits. In fact the emphasis has been more on infertility.
By the mid twentieth century procedures were well established. Sperm could be frozen and stored in improved ways. In cases where females failed to produce eggs banks allowed donors to supply eggs that could be preserved and used. As the post modern period unraveled it became clear that human fertility was waning for uncertain reasons. This stimulated the artificial insemination industry.
Though distinctions between animal and human treatments are nicely preserved the fundamental similarity between human and animal physiology cannot be completely overlooked. In both cases male semen is delicately placed in the reproductive tracts of females. There are discomforts and possible side effects in all cases. However, artificial insemination is a great boon for many couples who have difficulties in conceiving. The joy of having their own children is worth every cent and every moment of unpleasant hormone treatment.
